First Year Basketball Super Heroes
The first year basketball team from St. Louis made the long journey to Galway on the weekend of the 20th/21st of April to compete in All-Ireland play-offs at Grade B of the inter-schools competition. The team, backboned by the local Donagh Club (Blackwater Wheelers), qualified for All-Ireland play-offs after impressive wins over St. Louis Dundalk, Dunshaughlin Community School, Our Lady's Castleblayney, Virginia College and Scoil Mhuire Longford.
The All-Ireland play-offs had qualifiers from the North West - Loretto Letterkenny and from the West - Jesus and Mary Salerno and St. Louis Monaghan from North East.
The first game for the Monaghan squad was against Salerno, with many of their players winning All-Ireland honours with Moylough in the club under 14 competition. Star player on the Salerno club was in fact a first cousin of one of the St. Louis stars Edel Mulligan and a very tough match ensued. Despite a gallant effort by the Louis girls, the Galway team had the edge and ran out eventual winners. Next up was Loretto, Letterkenny and the Monaghan girls showed their class and emerged comprehensive winners, with double scores separating the teams at the final whistle.
St. Louis returned from the West knowing that they can compete with the best schools in the country at B grade, having finished in the top eight Nationally in the first year competition. Team and coaches look forward to the 2012-2013 academic year when they will again face opposition from some of the top level schools in the region.
Special thanks to team coach ~ Eimilie McKenna Transition Year and her fellow TY mentors Rachel Hannon and Nuala Murray for all their work with both first and second year basketball teams throughout the year. Eimlie got some help along the sideline on Saturday from her own club coach Tommy O Connor (Emyvale), who made the long journey west on Saturday and offered his invaluable expertise and calmness from the bench. Special thanks also to Ms Devlin for her excellent support and guidance and to Ms McNulty (Year Head) for accompanying the girls to Galway. Well done girls!!! We are very proud of you!!!

St. Louis First Year students participate in the prestigious LET Programme
On Monday, 28 November 2011, ten first-year students from St Louis Secondary School, Monaghan set off for the Share Centre in Lisnaskea, accompanied by Mrs Margaret Conlon, Deputy Principal and coordinator of the LET(Learning and Educating Together) Programme in St Louis. The programme, which combines enterprise modules and outdoor activities, is delivered by Young Enterprise Ireland and Junior Achievement Ireland, and aims to promote peace and reconciliation, introduce young people to the entrepreneurial spirit, and improve self-esteem, communication skills and interpersonal skills. The students-Amy Caulfield, Niamh Collins, Kenna Harnett, Edel Kerr, Lucy McDonnell, Aoibheann McQuaid, Ellen Mulligan, Katie Murphy, Kiara Nar, Ally O'Reardon-were selected earlier in the term to participate in the programme, and had been eagerly looking forward to Residential One, the three-day event which commenced on 28 November. The event commenced with the students meeting students from other participating schools and breaking down barriers by sharing information about themselves. Teamwork and the different roles within a team provided the focus for the event as students worked together and developed their skills. These all-important skills were used in a business context as students made decisions regarding the name of the business, product, location, staff and money spent on the enterprise.
At the end of each busy day there was ample opportunity to enjoy each other's company in a relaxed and friendly environment. Already students are looking forward to Residential Two where they will renew friendships, learn new skills and find the solution to 'how does Mrs Conlon manage to stay awake all night every night?'

St. Louis First Year students and the LET Programme
10 St. Louis First Year students participated in the LET programme in Lisnaskea from November 28th - 30th.
The LET Programme (Learning and Educating Together) is a project jointly delivered by Young Enterprise Northern Ireland and Junior Achievement Ireland. The programme was launched in October 2004 targeting young people aged between 12-13 years old. 10 St. Louis students have been chosen to take part in this programme.
The programme combines enterprise modules and outdoor activities. It will also introduce students to the basic entrepreneurial skills, giving them a broader perspective on what is enterprise.
The LET Programme involves schools north and south of the border. It also promotes peace and reconciliation between young people from both communities in Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic of Ireland.
The St. Louis students who will be participating in the programme will meet with the students from other participating schools three times in the year for a residential course at the Share Centre in Lisnaskea.
During their period of residency, students participate in a series of programmes that focus on:
~ Peace and reconciliation with an emphasis on creating an understanding of different cultures
~ Learning communication skills
~ Exploring the environment and how a respect for the environment impacts on the economy
~ Business start up and the role of small business
~ Personal finance and budgeting
This is a very exciting initiative and we are delighted to be participating in it.
