First Year Basketball Super Heroes
The first year basketball team from St. Louis made the long journey to Galway on the weekend of the 20th/21st of April to compete in All-Ireland play-offs at Grade B of the inter-schools competition. The team, backboned by the local Donagh Club (Blackwater Wheelers), qualified for All-Ireland play-offs after impressive wins over St. Louis Dundalk, Dunshaughlin Community School, Our Lady's Castleblayney, Virginia College and Scoil Mhuire Longford.
The All-Ireland play-offs had qualifiers from the North West - Loretto Letterkenny and from the West - Jesus and Mary Salerno and St. Louis Monaghan from North East.
The first game for the Monaghan squad was against Salerno, with many of their players winning All-Ireland honours with Moylough in the club under 14 competition. Star player on the Salerno club was in fact a first cousin of one of the St. Louis stars Edel Mulligan and a very tough match ensued. Despite a gallant effort by the Louis girls, the Galway team had the edge and ran out eventual winners. Next up was Loretto, Letterkenny and the Monaghan girls showed their class and emerged comprehensive winners, with double scores separating the teams at the final whistle.
St. Louis returned from the West knowing that they can compete with the best schools in the country at B grade, having finished in the top eight Nationally in the first year competition. Team and coaches look forward to the 2012-2013 academic year when they will again face opposition from some of the top level schools in the region.
Special thanks to team coach ~ Eimilie McKenna Transition Year and her fellow TY mentors Rachel Hannon and Nuala Murray for all their work with both first and second year basketball teams throughout the year. Eimlie got some help along the sideline on Saturday from her own club coach Tommy O Connor (Emyvale), who made the long journey west on Saturday and offered his invaluable expertise and calmness from the bench. Special thanks also to Ms Devlin for her excellent support and guidance and to Ms McNulty (Year Head) for accompanying the girls to Galway. Well done girls!!! We are very proud of you!!!

The action has started in the first year lunch-time soccer league. Rang Doireann (5th year) have taken on the task of organising a round robin indoor soccer league for all first years. The first two matches 'tipped off' at lunch-time Thursday 1st September (Ireland beat England 5-4 and France and Germany drew 2 all). With a total of eight teams altogether in the league, each team will be guaranteed seven matches before the top two teams play off in the final. With four matches every week, it is hoped to get to the final stages before the Halloween mid-term. Follow your teams' progress on the notice board in the school gym. All matches will last seven minutes and are played on Thursdays and Fridays at lunch break.
Well done to Rang Doireann for organising this brilliant tournament.
