St Louis, Monaghan Awards Ceremony 2018


The Annual Awards Ceremony in St Louis Secondary School, Monaghan took place in Halla San Lughaidh on Friday 18th May. Proceedings opened with a beautiful rendition of “ Gonna build a mountain” and “My favourite things” by the first year choir.

Ms. Vera O’ Brien, Principal, began by extending a Céad Mile Fáilte to staff, students, invited guests, representatives from the Board of Management and Parents’ Association. Ms O’ Brien acknowledged the importance of recognising the achievements of students in all aspects of school life, curricular and extra-curricular. She stated “In St Louis Secondary School we provide a holistic education to the students entrusted to our care. We recognise the contribution of you, our students to the development of our school and by honouring you today we inspire others to follow your example.”

The first awards to be presented were to those students who excelled in the Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate exams in 2017. The award for Best Leaving Certificate 2017 was presented by Ms. O’ Brien to Amy Caulfield. Amy is completing her portfolio in Bray Institute of Further Education. Due to college commitments Amy was not present but the award was accepted on her behalf by Simone Clerkin. The awards for Best Junior Certificate 2017 were presented by Ms. O’ Brien to Gertruda Kalyvnaite, Austeja Pakulyte and Aoife Staunton.

Certificates for full attendance were presented to first year students Aoife Mc Kenna, Keelin Wykes, Niamh Clerkin, Nikki Murphy, Donna Sherlock, Briana MacCinna and Orla Sherry by Mr. Brady, second year students Ella Connolly, Jade Kierans, Ciara Mc Ardle, Sheenagh Mc Kenna, Alicia Nmezi, Halle Mc Ginnity, Cathy Mc Kenna and Kate Mc Caffrey received their certificates from Ms. U Mc Nally, Ms. Mc Caffrey presented certificates of attendance to 3rd year students Abigail Finnegan and Laura Keelan, Ms. Conlon presented an award for full attendance in TY to Rachel Sherry and Ms. Martin presented a certificate to fifth year student Caroline Moran for full attendance.

The Coiste play a valuable role in the life of St Louis as school leaders and a link between staff and students. This year marked a new departure in the life of the student council as students are now elected from each year group. The presentations were made by Ms. Mc Caffrey Coiste Liaison. The Head Girl Leah Sleator, Deputy Head Girl Aisling Hurson and the following Coiste members received awards Nicole Myers and Orla Sherry 1st year, Katelyn MacLeod and Amy Reid 2nd year, Niamh Flynn and Emer Mc Glone 3rd year, Arpitha Muthalagu and Emma Mc Keown in TY and Caoimhe Cudden, Sadhbh Fitzpatrick, Kirsty Lee Brady, Ellen Mc Ateer, Lauren Mc Kenna and Megan Mohan in 5th year.

An award was presented to Rhia Nar; a first year student who qualified for the All Ireland Final of Poetry Aloud, Rhia came second in the Junior Section. Over 2,000 students entered this national competition. Ms. Conlon made the presentation.

Ms. Mc Cooey presented the awards for success in poetry to Briana MacCinna, Donna Shelock and Neidin Wall. She also presented the short story competition winners Briana MacCinna, Orla Mc Guigan and Grace O’Malley with their awards. Briana MacCinna was crowned Spelling Bee Queen and received a glass piece from Ms. Mc Cooey.

Gertruda Kalyvnaite also received an award for the best JC Maths and Science results in 2017. Bn. Uí Ghallchoir made the presentation.

Ms. Clerkin delivered the citation and presented the awards to the Irish Junior Maths competitors Molly Fields, Briana MacCinna and Tara Gillespie.

The next award was presented to 6th year students Simone Clerkin, Alison Mc Donnell and Rhainna Mc Entee who represented the school at the national finals of the Senior Science Quiz. The award was presented by Ms. Finnerty.

The TY Build a Bank Team of Aoife Cassidy, Eva Connolly, Kerry Corley, Meabh Cusack, Nicole Kenny, Sarah Mc Elvaney, Caoimhe Mc Gorman, Bronagh Mc Kenna, Carla Reinhardt and Rachel Sherry received their awards from Monaghan county footballer Jack Mc Carron representing Bank of Ireland.

Ms. Mc Cooey presented certificates to the Gaisce students who recently completed a gruelling trek of Bragan.

Mr. Penders presented Lauren Mc Kenna with an award for her success in the Central Bank Art competition and for also winning the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Good Friday Agreement 20th Anniversary School’s Creative Competition. He also presented awards to Gertuda Kalyvnaite and Emma Hurson Special Merit Award winners in the Texaco art Competition. Gertruda also received a Special Merit Award in the Mental Health Art Competition.

Sporting Awards:

St Louis Secondary School is fortunate to have an active, vibrant and committed PE Department with Ms O’ Leary, Ms Rooney and Ms Fleming at the helm. There were many awards presented to students for success in sport. Ms O’ Leary presented medals to the team who were successful in the Athletics competition in the Antrim Forum. Ava Ross received an award from Ms. O’ Leary for her great success in the International Walking Competition. The St Louis Secondary School’s swimming team of Katie Bowden, Sheenagh Mc Kenna and Caitriona Mc Geough received their awards from Ms. O’Leary. Ms. Fleming presented an award to Amy Mulligan in recognition of her county council award for services to basketball; Ciara Oliphant accepted it on her behalf. Ciara also accepted an award for Alex Mulligan in recognition of her Irish International Caps. This was presented by Ms. Rooney. Ms. Rooney also made presentations to some members of the U19 basketball team in recognition of their huge commitment and dedication. Ms. Rooney also made a presentation to Louise Mc Ginnity for her success in handball.

Kate Dwyer received an award in recognition of her success in golf from Ms. Fleming. She recently played in the Ladies Irish Open in Baltray. Ms. Fleming presented showjumpers Siobhan Kelly and Aoibha Treanor with awards for success in showjumping and wished Aoibha every success as she competes in the Royal Dublin Horse Show in the RDS in August.

Perpetual Awards:

The Outstanding Achievement Award sponsored by the Staff of St Louis was presented to TY student Gertruda Kalyvnaite by Ms. Conlon in recognition of her national achievements Junior Certificate Science and Maths results 2017 which placed her in the top 10% in the country.

The Fiona Kieran Memorial Shield in memory of Fiona Kieran, a past pupil who left this world at a young age was presented to Rhia Nar by Ms. O’ Brien for her national success in Poetry Aloud.

The Award for Excellence sponsored by the Board of Management was presented to the Cast and Crew of “Sister Act”, the Transition Year Musical. The award was presented by Margaret Oliphant representing the Board of Management.

Raymond Aughey representing the Parents’ Association presented a shield sponsored by the Parents’ Association to Megan Mohan who embodies the Spirit of S. Louis and was a very worthy winner.

The final award The Pauline Devlin Memorial Shield in memory of our much loved colleague, teacher and friend was presented to International Handball Star Louise Mc Ginnity in recognition of her outstanding achievements by Ms. Deirdre Martin friend of Ms Devlin, member of the Board of Management and Mr. Jack Mc Carron Monaghan county footballer.

Ms Conlon who brought the proceedings to a close thanked Ms. Mc Caffrey for her superb organisation of the event, the special guests Mr. Raymond Aughey, Ms. Margaret Oliphant, Mr. Jack Mc Carron, the first year choir under the direction of Ms. Cassidy and Ms. Duffy, Mr. Brady, Ms. Flanagan, Ms. Mc Cooey , Ms Mc Donnell and Ms. Reilly for all their assistance, Martin, Rita and Susan for all their hard work, Rory Geary, photographer and Francis and Clare Mc Elroy for the medals and trophies.
