St Louis Crowned All-Ireland Champions

Louis Crowned All-Ireland Champions

There was All-Ireland success for the mighty Louis girls yesterday in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, in what was a superb nail biting game of basketball. The victorious Louis girls travelled to Tallaght Arena accompanied by over 150 Louis supporters to take on St Mary’s Midleton, Cork in the All-Ireland Final.

Once the customary formalities of the National Anthem were concluded, the Louis girls lined out for the throw-in with focus and determination. The beginning of the first quarter saw a shaky and nerve wracking start for the Louis girls as they struggled to find form, however, it wasn’t long before the Louis girls settled into their game with some superb scores from Alex Mulligan, Ava Ross and Rachel Callery putting the Louis girls ahead in the first 6 minutes 5 points to 3 points. Time out after six minutes allowed the girls a breather and a quick pep talk by coaches Olga Tavey and Bonnie Fleming. Play resumed and St Mary’s Midleton got some vital scores on the board throughout the remainder of the first quarter and second quarter to put them ahead at half time 24 points to 20 points.

The third quarter was a tense and nail biting time for the Louis girls as they added some much needed scores to their tally to draw level with St Mary’s. Score for score from each team was the theme for the remainder of the third quarter with the Louis girls etching ever so slightly ahead at the end of the quarter 37 points to 34 points.

The final quarter, the mighty Louis girls steamed rolled ahead of St Mary’s in style with determination, focus and with only one goal in mind, to lift the All-Ireland League Trophy and return to Monaghan All-Ireland Champions. The girls did not disappoint their travelling supporters and added to their growing tally with marvelous displays of teamwork and sheer determination to be crowned All-Ireland champions by 57 points to 48 points. Scenes of celebration from the team and travelling supporters lit up the Tallaght Arena as the Louis girls lifted the All-Ireland Trophy and our very own super star captain, Alex Mulligan, was presented with the Most Valuable Player award for her outstanding contribution to the game.

The Louis girls arrived home to Monaghan last night to a rapturous applause from travelling supporters, teachers, parents and members of the Board of Management. The first time in the history of St Louis that an All-Ireland Basketball trophy makes its long awaited journey to Monaghan.
