St. Louis represented at Thomas Meagher Exhibition
March 6, 2018
On Friday, February 23rd Emma Mc Keown and Jasmin Toal Mc Cann TY students in St. Louis Secondary School, Monaghan along with their teachers Ms. Hurson and Ms. Conlon attended an exhibition in the GPO Visitors Centre at the kind invitation of the Ceann Comhairle Sean O Fearghail TD. The first ever permanent exhibition of the Irish flag was organised by the Thomas Meagher Foundation to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the tricolour. On March 7th 1848 Thomas Francis Meagher flew the first Irish flag inspired by the French flag at 33, The Mall in Waterford. The GPO was considered to be the most appropriate place for this exhibition given that the flag flew from the rooftops there during Easter week 1916.
The assembled gathering heard that from Senator Mark Daly that “the exhibition embodies all the aims of the Thomas Meagher Foundation, to promote pride in and respect for the Irish flag and its message of peace, to educate the school children of Ireland of this message and to assist them in being active citizens in their community”. The students had an opportunity to view the exhibition and were delighted to meet the Ceann Comhairle Sean O Fearghail TD and the immortal and very tall John Hayes who had 104 caps for Ireland in rugby and is a member of the Thomas F. Meagher Foundation honorary board.
