TY First Aid & Defib Training
Two of our TY classes set aside their textbooks for a day of essential, real-world instruction led by First Aid trainer Paul Oliphant. Focused on critical emergency response, the immersive session transformed Halla San Lughaidh into practical training grounds, equipping students with the confidence and skills needed to react swiftly when every second counts.
The cornerstone of the workshop was hands-on CPR practice paired with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation. Under Paul’s expert guidance, the students learned to deliver high-quality chest compressions, mastering the optimal depth and rhythm required during a cardiac event. Paul demystified the AED, walking the TY classes through the device’s clear visual and voice prompts. By placing defibrillators directly into the students' hands, the session stripped away the fear and hesitation that often paralyze bystanders during medical emergencies.
The workshops also addressed another urgent threat: choking. Students learned how to spot the immediate signs of acute respiratory distress and distinguish between partial and complete airway blockages. Paul demonstrated the precise mechanics of back blows and abdominal thrusts, allowing students to practice the physical techniques while learning that quick, decisive action can clear an airway long before emergency services arrive.
TY serves as a vital bridge between academic study and real-world responsibility, making practical life-saving skills a crucial addition to the curriculum. Early intervention during cardiac arrest or choking dramatically increases survival rates, proving that training young people creates safer, more resilient communities. Thanks to Paul Oliphant’s engaging session, these TY students walked away not just with new knowledge, but with the practical capability to step up when it matters most. CPR truly saves lives and two full classes are now prepared to make that difference.
